Abstract:
Specialists, including young ones, who plan to work in multilingual oil and gas companies, as well as in geology and chemistry fields, must have the appropriate skills to use professional terms, in particular homonyms and paronyms, to achieve career success and to comply with safety regulations. Surveys of students of 1-4 courses of Kazan Federal University and Kazan State University of Architecture and Engineering revealed that about 83% of their participants out of 318 students confirmed the fact of their insufficient knowledge of professional terminology, safety issues from a linguistic point of view, as well as adequate behavior in hypothetical professional situations. The results of the surveys showed the need for students to master the skills of operating professional terms, which can often cause difficulties connected with false associations, lead to erroneous perception of information, content distortions, and errors in lexical compatibility, and inaccuracies. Therefore, the study addressed issues related to the terms “false friends of a translator”, taking into account their similarities or differences in pronunciation, meaning and spelling in English and Russian. In order to achieve the goal of the work, the authors conducted experimental training that promotes the language development of students through the effective study and assimilation of professional lexical units, namely “false friends of a translator”. The main methods the study was based on were comparative and empirical methods, the method of observation, as well as the method of learning-practice-control. Methods of comparison and observation ensured that differences between the English and Russian terms under consideration were taken into account. The results of the study showed that appropriate language training of future specialists in the correct use of the lexical units under consideration, as well as safe behavior, can improve professional growth by developing their professional communication skills, as well as help to minimize accidents at work. The results of the work could contribute to making a certain contribution to the practice of preparing specialists in the areas under consideration for their future work. The results obtained can be used in the practice of language teaching in higher education, when creating special-purpose dictionaries in the oil and gas field, in the fields of geology, chemistry, and also to make a certain contribution to terminology. Keywords:
